A Spanish diver perishes on the Costa Concordia wreck

The list of victims of the crash of a huge liner that sank off the coast of an Italian island in 2012 was replenished by one more person. According to Italian media, a diver died during the restoration of the ship.

It turned out to be 42-year-old native of sunny Spain, Izrael Franco Moreno, who worked for the Italian-American company Titan-Mikoperi. It was this consortium that managed to successfully carry out the most complicated operation to bring the Costa Concordia upright.

After the ship was to raise Moreno, as well as a team of experienced divers performed a new task: they participated in the operation to remove the liner from the underwater platform. For this, it was necessary for specialists to fill in air with special containers attached to the board.

At the moment, the police find it difficult to answer what became the real cause of the death of a young man. However, the carabinieri claim that the city’s prosecutor’s office in Grosseto has already begun investigating the case and has also seized part of the ship, where the accident occurred. In the meantime, all the colleagues of the deceased diver will face a series of interrogations, which, according to the police, will be able to shed light on all the circumstances of the tragic incident.

According to the preliminary version of the investigators, Moreno’s leg, which was located at a rather dangerous depth, was stuck between several steel parts of the cruise ship.

However, most likely, the diver’s attempts to get out of the trap on his own were unsuccessful: he only injured his leg. His colleague suspected something was amiss and rushed to the aid of a friend, freed him from the steel grip of the ship and pulled him out onto the deck. According to eyewitnesses, at that time the wounded Spaniard was still conscious.

He was urgently taken to a local hospital, but doctors could not save him: a 42-year-old man lost too much blood.

The sudden death of a Spanish diving specialist again reminded of the tragic incident that occurred two years ago. So, the president of the Toscana region Enrico Rossi told reporters: “Another tragic death has been added to this long list of victims. In addition to pain, we feel anger caused by the loss of a young man who did his duty. ”

As Italian media previously reported, the process of preparing a sunken cruise ship for disposal should be completed by early summer.

However, the Italian authorities still can not determine the portto which the ship will be towed.

Last month, it became known that there are 12 ports in mind, seven of which are located in neighboring countries. But experts working on this issue revealed that preference would most likely be given to one of the country's ports, where the ship is located.

The huge ship Costa Concordia wrecked upon stumbling into reefs off the coast of Giglio Island in early 2012. Then the tragic incident claimed more than 30 lives.
