The best Italian films of all time

Despite the fact that this mission is practically impossible, we nevertheless tried to choose the top ten most outstanding films of all time from all the amazing variety that Italian cinema gave us.

Obsession (Ossesione), 1943

The wonderful film "Obsession", which was banned for showing in Italy by Benito Mussolini himself, combines, perhaps, all the points necessary for a classic Italian novel: passion, death and repentance. Briefly about the plot: a young man falls in love with a married lady, and the story ends with the murder of her husband. The guilt of a huge burden falls on their hearts and does not leave them until the end of life.

The Miracle in Milan (Miracolo in Milano), 1951

This touching film tells the story of a woman who accidentally found a baby and took care of him until her death. Some time later, a kind woman appears to her pupil in a dream and gives him a magical dove that can fulfill all wishes.

The Road (La Strada), 1954

The painting “The Road” is a classic work of the famous Italian director Federico Fellini (Federico Fellini), who based it on the story of a circus performer who decided to acquire a young and poor girl as his wife and assistant in the arena. Being very lonely and useless to anyone, the girl soon falls in love with a charming tightrope walker performing in a traveling circus. A typical love triangle with a tragic ending.

Sweet Life (La Dolce Vita), 1959

This film can be safely called the pinnacle of Fellini's work: he brought the director "Golden Palm Branch" at the Cannes Film Festival in 1960. This is a comedy drama about a journalist who spends a week in Rome in search of love. And again, in the end, someone will be happy, and someone will die. But just who?

"Divorce in Italian" (Divorzio All'Italiana), 1961

The main character Ferdinando falls in love with a young beauty and decides to divorce his wife by all means. However, the man does not follow the quite standard path: he adjusts her infidelity and kills his wife allegedly in a fit of jealousy. And, it would seem, Fefe achieves the desired, if not for one “but” ...

Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di Biciclette), 1948

A touching drama about the relationship between father and son. Antonio takes a prestigious job that requires a bike. But alas, the vehicle is stolen immediately the next day after its acquisition. With the help of his son, Bruno Antonio rushes in search of a bicycle, during which he begins to understand life very differently. The good news is: no one will die in this film.

“New Cinema Paradiso” (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso), 1988

Giuseppe Tornatore received many awards in 1988, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. This is a story about a young man and an old man who are connected by a love of cinema.

The Postman (1994)

A romantic comedy telling about the life of the postman of a small Italian island, who declares her love with the help of his Chilean friend, poet Pablo Neruda. The lead actor, Massimo Troisi, passed away the day after filming ended. The tape is dedicated to his memory.

“Life is beautiful” (La Vita è Bella), 1997

This drama brought its director (by the way, Roberto Begnini (Roberto Begnini) also played the main role) many awards. The story of Guido, an Italian of Jewish descent, who will endure all the horrors of genocide, while protecting his little son from them. The plot of the film was the story of the Benigny family.

Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza), 2013

This picture was not discussed by the lazy last year. The Great Beauty directed by Paolo Sorrentino has won an Oscar, Golden Globe, Golden Palm Branch, and many other awards.

The picture reveals the story of Jep Gambardella, a journalist who only at the end of his life understands that in the pursuit of wealth and recognition he missed his chance for happiness.
